Today myself and my housemates went to our landlord to finally sign the contract for the house we were going to rent for the next year. Unfortunately, when we got there the landlord told us that his son (who is the owner of the house) has got a job in London and wants to sell the house to buy a new one down south. Needless to say, hearing about this so late left us in a bit of a lurch, although we have resumed house hunting and found another possible candidate.
Hopefully I’ll be able to end up in some decent housing this time because accomodation was the one thing that has really spoilt my first year at university. 🙁
You found the house ages ago though didn’t you?
How come you’ve only just gone to sign the contract now?
As for houses, don’t worry. I’m sure there are plenty of decent ones left.
May I recommend Homes4u instead of the MSH website. That’s who we went with this year and found a much better house than last year – similar rent.
Ok, you have to pay an agency fee of a weeks rent (about £40) for your troubles, but it could be worth it.
Also, I recommend looking at houses in withington where we are. Loads of nice semi detatched houses in a fairly decent area, and only a few mins further than Owens Park.
You could always get 10 Heyscroft Road, which we saw and wasn’t that bad. Its on the same street as our new house!
Although 10 Heyscroft is a 4 bedroomed house, so never mind.
There are four of us though, so a 4 bedroomed house would be ideal… 🙂
As for only signing the contract now – one of our accomodation offices was incredibly slow at doing references which probably set the whole thing back a month. However, even if we had signed the contract it would be very difficult to enforce it and we’d probably be looking at financial penalties for a breach rather than enforcing the contract.
We are actually looking at a house in Withington at the moment, just need to check with BT whether it has a phone line (because the people at the moment don’t use the phone) and if it is ADSL capable.
He, he, he. Homes 4 u is the place where i used to work. Some of the places there are really nasty. There rae however some very nice houses that arent too expensive.
Im sure it will have a phone line??? If not, just get it reconnected by BT for free. That’s what we had to do, since the previous tennants cancelled/never used their phone line.
And I can guarantee it would be 100% ADSL capable, why wouldn’t it? Its in a city, plus if you got a house in Withington it would probably use the same exchange as we currently use.
We got a house thats £45 a week, and its really really nice, considering its let to students. It could almost be a nice family home.
Haha, we’re gonna trash it 🙂
Well, I wanted to make sure when it came to the phone line. However, I rang BT and (for once!) they were helpful enough to tell me that there was line installed and they could throw the switch whenever we wanted for free.
I’m going to settle everything on Monday, hopefully the house won’t have been sold by then. 🙂
That really isnt a good idea, unless of course you want all of your deposit being taken, and a large fine…. (read the really really nasty contract that you had to sign…)
Somehow I think Haslam was joking when he said they were going to trash it… 😉
Wats been wrong with ur accomidation this year Paul?
Hmm, where do I start? 🙂
Apart from putting me in a room without ethernet access (you would think a CS student would be first priority for a network connection, but according to the person I spoke to “it’s not a good enough reason”) they also took our toilet away without telling us and didn’t fix it until the next day, managed to let a sewage pipe leak into our kitchen/lounge, took three weeks to replace a telephone and used fire doors so weak that someone can push them open from the other side.
There are numerous other things that the accomodation office have managed to trip over, but I’m just glad that I’m not in the same place next year.
Sounds like fun!! They expected u to be drunk all the time and not need these things etc!! 😀
If you were drunk and wanted to spew up nicely you’d be pretty damn pissed off if the toilet was missing though! 🙂
