Film day

After a couple of setbacks, Kirk, Rachel Ed and I finally managed to get our long awaited film night/day organised for this afternoon. Instead of holding it at our house, we went to Kirk’s instead, which probably turned out to be a good decision in the long run because it’s a bit more central as opposed to Withington which is out of the way for most people.

We started off by wandering around Somerfields in search of food, which took a while because people couldn’t decide what they wanted. In the end though we managed to reach a rough consensus and took the food to those dodgy U-Scan things (self-serve checkouts that are supposed to reduce requirements for staff to man the tills but instead they spend all their time fixing the machines when they break down) and managed to save quite a bit because of a saver card and Kirk’s staff discount.

We were originally intending to get back, have a bite to eat and then start watching films, but as usual things didn’t go exactly to plan and we ended up talking for about two hours instead (not a bad thing, just wasn’t what was expected :). Eventually we got around to throwing my recording of Flash Gordon into the video player and sitting back to watch it.

The film was met with mixed reactions—as someone who had seen it several times before I was quite happy to sit through it, as it’s a good laugh. Kirk thought it was a bit sexist (at the same time insinuating that was the reason I liked it!), which is a fair point but to be honest I wouldn’t have expected anything less given the type of film it was. I also caused a bit of consternation with my evil laughter at certain points. 🙂

After Flash Gordon the plan was to watch the Rocky Horror Picture Show, but again general chatting took over so that didn’t happen. We did however skip to the Time Warp chapter, although no getting up and dancing was involved this time.

When it started to get towards eight o’clock, I suggested making a move, partially because I had a lot of lab work to do. I walked the best part of the way with the others before discovering that both Kirk and Rachel wanted to see Sahara so I caught the bus back on my own whilst they went to the cinema.

Once home I managed to storm through my lab work in about fifteen minutes, not sure how I managed that but it was great to do so because I’ll have nothing to worry about tomorrow evening (the work is due in on Tuesday morning) so I’ll be able to enjoy Warped at the pub. Despite it being my software engineering demonstration tomorrow, I’m back to being stupidly happy despite a few things going wrong this weekend (mainly consisting of me managing to pull a ladder down onto my head from the loft, nearly knocking myself out in the process, plus walking into a vacuum cleaner in the dark and whacking my hand against something causing it to cut in three separate places).

All in all, everything is going as well as could be expected and indeed better than expected in some cases. Hurrah! 🙂

  1. I know I’ve said it before about Flash Gordon, but I’m going to say it again.
Who would be afraid of the bad guys when they are dressed in pink?

  2. Aye, the troopers in the film are a bit pathetic – Dale manages to take half a dozen of them out without too much trouble. It’s still an amusing film though. 🙂
