Book meme

Seeing as Cez tagged me and I’m not one to spoil the fun (feel free to fill this in via the comments if you don’t have a blog):

1. Total number of books I own:
Far far too many. I honestly couldn’t count them all. Suffice to say I have at least 200 Doctor Who books, probably about 100 computer-related ones and then there’s bookcases full of more books on top of that (top tip: never ever let me go to Hay-on-Wye for a holiday :). I’ve always been a fast and fairly advanced reader though, unfortunately I don’t get much time to read anymore. 🙁

2. The last book I bought:
Non-fiction: Mastering FreeBSD and OpenBSD Security.
Fiction: Not entirely sure, I’ve acquired Dune from the Warped library recently and I guess the most recent fiction I bought was probably one of the Doctor Who novels I have on my shelf.

3. The last book I read:
I’m trying to read Dune (Frank Herbert) at the moment, although with exams and other stuff on I’m not making much progress.

4. Five books that mean a lot to me:
Not sure really, this is a tough one, more ones that bring back memories/are classic books:

  • The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings (J.R.R. Tolkien) – Epic story (counting all four books as one, because you really can’t understand LOTR without having read The Hobbit) and the first “adult” book I ever read as a child
  • The Glerp (David M. McPhail) – memories of primary school
  • Day of the Triffids (John Wyndam) – makes me wonder what life would be like if something like this actually happened
  • I, Robot (Issac Asimov) – collection of short stories, all superbly well written and with some clever twists.
  • How to Lie with Statistics (Darrell Huff) – amusing read and one which will ensure that you never take marketing claims at face value ever again

5. Tag 5 people and have them fill this out in their blogs:
Rachel, Tom, Lizzy, Kate, Jon.
