Got my final exam over and done with on Tuesday afternoon and as of now I’m free until early September. Well, free from university work anyway, seeing as I still have to find somewhere to live after the end of June, get 10+ sites up and running, fix everything at Compsoc and clear everything else on my rapidly expanding todo list. I could also do with finding a job as well, if only part time, just to get a bit of extra money/experience.
With regards to the databases exam, it didn’t go too badly, I could understand all the questions so choosing three from four wasn’t too difficult. As usual I didn’t finish on time so I probably lost quite a few marks as a result, even though I made sure that I attempted all the parts for each question. It’s so infuriating knowing the answer but not being able to write it down fast enough! Fortunately this module has a 30% weighting for the labs, which I did fairly well in, so even if I only got 50% on the paper I’ll still have easily passed overall.
In other news the power supply unit in Mr Tall (the old Compsoc machine that still handles mail and about half the active accounts) went down just as I got back from the pub on Monday, so I was suddenly hit with people complaining about it on UA (fair enough really, it’s happened once or twice before, which is why we need to shift people over to the new machine quickly). Needless to say, that didn’t really do my “get plenty of sleep the night before an exam” idea much good. It’s all sorted now though, thanks to Andrew managing to replace the PSU, although it went down again on Wednesday but thankfully a quick reboot sorted it this time. I’ve managed to get a few more users moved over, so hopefully soon we’ll be able to switch things over the new machine, which has much better hardware, connectivity and is accessible throughout the summer (unlike the union, which will be closed for the most part).
Anyway, now that exams are over and things are back online with Compsoc, I should be able to relax for a bit. I’m still worried about houses, but I’ve got time to look now and I’m sure I’ll find somewhere soon. There are a couple of places in Fallowfield that look promising but I haven’t managed to get hold of the landlords yet. Hopefully I’ll get them today instead, seeing as it’s a weekend so they should answer the home phone numbers that they list.
Off into town now to buy cards and presents, need to find something for Father’s Day next weekend and pick up some bits and bobs for the barbeque this evening. Hopefully the pollen count will be a bit lower today so I don’t have to spend most of my time sneezing and trying to stop my eyes from stinging. Bleh.
don’t talk to me about hayfever! Sweet Jesus. My eyes were swolent up yesterday and my breathing is still getting worse. It’s horthorn trees/bushes that get me. it’s always when they’re flowering when I’m in trouble. That reminds me. I need a new inhaler.
As for Father’s Day. Does anyone have any ideas about what to get their dad’s? I don’t have a clue. He doesn’t listen to music. Doesn’t really do anything… He reads but he has loads of books and he just gives them to my uncle.
It may have to be something boring like a shirt or some wine….
My hayfever seems to come and go with the years, sometimes I get it really badly, other times it barely affects me at all. What’s really weird is that barbeques seem to null the effect for me (I know someone else who mentioned that it works for them too)—we were outside all last night on the grass/patio and I didn’t sneeze at all. I guess the smoke must blow away the pollen or something, can’t really think of an explanation for it but it’s a good excuse to have more barbeques! 😉
I thought Father’s Day would be difficult, my dad doesn’t really drink, listen to music (only stuff he does listen to he already owns most of it) or play football/golf. Thankfully when I went into Waterstones they had a display for Father’s Day and I found a biography of Lance Armstrong which I bought. I think my dad will like it because he’s always watched the Tour De France and it looks like an interesting read if you follow that sort of stuff. I’m sure he’ll appreciate the thought anyway.
It is strange how hayfever can get you at different times. i’ll walk the dog across the fields and up the hill and feel fine. I seem to get it going to bed and waking up in the morning. It hits me hard. I know dust may be a factor but I do try and keep the my room more clean around this time of year for that reason.
I was watching tv with my dad. He asked me if I had anything for him yet for Father’s day. I said no and he said he’d like a new toiletry (spelling?) bag for going away with. He said he didn’t want anything else because he always says he doesn’t. I’ll get him a bag but I think I’ll get him a bottle of wine too because I feel as though I should do. Oh, and a card. I usually rip my dad apart with B’day/Xtmas/Father’s Day cards! 🙂
One year was bad though. It was his birthday and I heard my sister taking the piss out of him saying he was old because it was coming up to his 60th. I thought she was serious so sent him a 60th card and an email saying happy 60th and really made the effort for him. Turns out he was 54 Oh well….. 🙂
I find that hayfever hits me hardest on the bus, which is a right nuisance because I usually don’t have any tissues with me so I just have to sit there sweltering and sniffling.
Toiletries are usually my standby gift for female relatives (who are so much easier to buy for), although my dad goes away on courses quite often so I guess he might have appreciated something like that. I don’t think he’d like a card saying he’s 60, seeing as he’s not even in his mid-40’s yet! (scary thing: when he was my age he was getting married to my mum…).
I tend to underestimate people’s ages, which worked quite well once when it was my auntie’s birthday and we were having a party because it was a special number. I thought she must be thirty as she didn’t look forty and I couldn’t think of any other special numbers around that region. Turns out she was forty so I was definitely in her good books that day. 🙂
I think my dad wanted to toiletries more for the bag for work trips/holidays than for the stuff inside them. Although saying that his feet do stick some times….
I’m never good with people’s birthdays. I know my sister is 25 though. If my dad is 55 now then my mum may be 53. I can’t remember if my dad was born in 1950 or not… Think so. bah, what do people care anyway?
