Kate got me thinking about travelling with this LJ post, so here’s the list of places I’d like to visit before I’m say… 30:
- Empire State Building (would love to take a picture from the top)
- Great Wall of China
- Great Pyramid of Giza
- Statue of Liberty
- Eiffel Tower (I’ve seen it, but not been up because of time constraints)
- New York city (just to say “I’ve been”)
- Gibralter and the Falklands (the last remnants of the British Empire)
- Antartica (last wilderness)
- Number 10 Downing Street (who knows, might be in there by the time I’m 30 anyway 😉
I’d also like to climb at least one mountain, just for the experience (don’t know why, not been hiking/climbing since I was about 12 and I’m probably no longer fit enough).
I hear that the Eiffel Tower is crap; it’s a rip off to get up there and generally not worth the hassle… then again, who cares how much it costs if that’s what you want to do.
I absolutely don’t get NYC… everybody loves it, but why? Maybe it’s good when you’re there but for me it really doesn’t appeal.
You’ve kind of gone for “big places” but have you considered that maybe you could just go somewhere to see what it’s like, not because there is something there? I can say with full authority that the Great Wall is amazing… but equally, I can tell you that for me visiting somewhere truly foreign (which largely can’t be found outside of Asia, probably) is a far more exciting and fulfilling experience to the point that I would love more than anything to just book a flight to somewhere I know nothing about (literally, not even know where it exists on a map) and visit.
On the topic of hiking… if you’re up for it I really want to go visit somewhere soon. Maybe over Easter a few of us could get together and do the Lake District, the Pennines or somewhere else. Like you, I’ve not been hiking since about 12 (when I don’t think I really appreciated it) but I’m dying to go now… if only it weren’t so cold.
Anyway, time to think about heading out. Good luck with the OS exam 🙂
I think the Eiffel Tower was free or at least very cheap to go up last time I was there, then again that was in year 8 so that’s going back seven years or so.
As for NYC, I don’t know whether I’d love it or not, I’d just like to go and check it out to see if it really is as good as everyone says. It’ll probably be like London—exciting on your first trip, especially if you’re a kid, but not much cop after that.
Personally I wouldn’t want to just pick up a rucksack and disappear into the unknown, that’s not my style at all. I prefer to know where I’m going and what I’m going to do when I get there, but that’s probably because I’m boring and formal more than anything else. 🙂
As for hiking, I’d have to see whether I can get myself any decent equipment first, going in my normal shoes probably wouldn’t be the best of ideas—and you’re certainly right about it being cold (although on a nice spring day it wouldn’t be quite as bad, but knowing my luck it’d be thunderstorms!).
And what’s this? A post by Lewis at 7:20 in the morning?!? I didn’t know you could get up at that time. 😉
Ah, that’s the trick you see… I can’t get up a 0720 so I just didn’t go to bed. Works every time.
Yeah, maybe not proper walking boots but certainly something that gives some good foot support. Other than that you don’t need much more than a cheap rucksack and flask—none of this unclean camping crap, stay at Youth Hostels!
I thought that might be the case. 🙂
Last time I stayed at a youth hostel it was awful, full of students and travellers and it had hardly any clean showers/sinks. Ugh.
“Last time I stayed at a youth hostel it was awful, full of students and travellers and it had hardly any clean showers/sinks. Ugh.’’
Ah. You expect your tent will be much better? 😛
No, which is probably why I haven’t been for a long hike/climb for years. 🙂
Backpacking is fabulous! And picking up and just going is fantastic. I had a plan for most of my trip, but I also changed my plans at the drop of a hat, and those are some of my best stories/memories.
I’m not so keen on going up the eiffel tower, but it is worth seeing, and wandering around the local neighbourhoods is great!
I’ve seen 10 Downing street, but only as we stumbled across it.
And I’ve been to New York, but I was 12. I’d like to go again, as I don’t remember much.
I wanted to go to Antarctica…but considering how awful English winters make me feel, I think I’ll pass.
I had my next backpacking trip all planned out 🙁
I’m far too sensible and unadventurous (read: boring) to change plans at the drop of a hat. Once I make a plan, I usually stick to it, the logic being if I’ve made a plan it’s there to follow and if I don’t what was the point in making one in the first place?
I’ve seen number 10 (I think I went past before they shut it all off), but I’d really like to see inside. Like I said if I get my way that should be before I’m 30 anyway. 🙂
English winters aren’t so bad once you get used to them, especially if you make sure to wrap up instead of going out wearing a crop top and mini skirt as some silly people do who care more about fashion than health.
Perhaps we should organise a Warped backpacking trip across Europe? 😉
I’ve been to New York. It’s a great place. Well worth a vist to see all the sites and stuff.
Places I want to go:
Israel/Palestine.
Egypt.
Mexico.
Alaska.
Rome (again)
Great Wall of China.
The place where the Tibetan Dhali Lama is. (You can meet him too!)
Himalayas.
Petra.
Brazil (to see the big statue of J.C.)
Easter Island.
Kenya (safari)
I suppose I’d better start saving up! 🙂
Paul I somehow doubt you’d ever see me in a mini skirt! (Or a crop top!)
I prefer not to break people.
Anyways I’m Canadian we know how to dress warmly. shrug the cold just tends to dig into your joints :/
Of course not, you just make every bloke in Warped paranoid by looking at us, whispering to Lizzy and then bursting into a giggling fit. 😛
Anyway, I’m sure it wouldn’t be as terrifying as me in the same outfit…
You lot do that to yourselves! It has nothing to do with us.
It’s just unfortunate that I’ve inherited my Mum’s very loud laugh.
